Delighting in the Details

Lori, at All You Have to Give, has been meditating on the "details" each weekend and I've decided to join her. This week has been a full week. I looked back on my posts this week and thought about my activities and I see: the Word, Prayer, Fellowship, Family. The key components to life, really.

But the details are in the small moments...My Cutie Bug made a mask for her party at school Wednesday. The theme was Wizard of Oz so her mask was supposed to look like Dorothy. I'm sure all of the masks were cute, but honestly, hers was the best - the eyelashes were curled, the eyes had little pupils and the hair was in two pigtails with red ribbons. That girl knows how to pay attention to details. So, I just had to take a picture of her with some classmates but then I realized I would never know who these kids are.
The detail is this: masks. If we wear a mask, no one will know who we really are and that makes fellowship impossible. God created the church as a place for people to be authentic with each other. That's how we encourage one another, lift one another up, pray for one another - when there are no masks.

Masks are difficult to see through too - you remember wearing masks with little holes for your eyes that you could hardly see through? That makes it tough to read Scripture with clear focus. Our masks get in the way of seeing what God has for us there.

If we do not come to prayer with our authentic selves, it is a mockery of prayer. So, the mask must come off in the presence of God. Really, do we think God doesn't see our true self anyway? He knows all the faults, mistakes and foibles and He still loves us.

It's easy to put on a mask in this bloggy world because we can manipulate words and even pictures to show our best side. But, I believe God wants us to be real, to be honest and sincere and take off the masks because His glory shines on our faces (just like Moses) only when the mask is off. When Moses was in God's presence, God's glory could be reflected to the Israelites but he had to put a veil on because it was too bright! If we are regularly in God's presence, our faces will shine too, but let's not cover it up with a mask!

THAT was perfect!! I remember a mask I had once, it was impossible to breathe! It came back to me right away...When we wear masks, it is impossible to breathe too!

I LOVE your reflections...thanks for joining and I agree, hers WAS the best;)

Oh...I like it! We had a pastor friend once ask us, "why can't we just be open and honest with our brothers and sisters?" People have a hard time being transparent with each other. I guess it shows weakness. Who are we trying to impress?? I think it's kind of funny because the One who really matters already knows our hearts. We're strange creatures aren't we? Thanks for stopping by my place. Blessings.

Thank you for your encouraging words at my blog--and your oh, so encouraging words here.
One of my favorite quotes is:
It shouldn't be that hard to be yourself.
But sometimes it is just that: so hard to be me. A mask feels more comfortable.
Thanks for challenging me to lead a more honest life.
Love this word picture. I'm all about no masks.

I'm writing an article right now using the Wizard Of Oz characters. It's fun to see the masks.

Thank you, Heather, for the time you took to comment on my blog today. It means a lot to know I am not alone in my struggle.

Lord, bless Heather with opportunities to share the passions of her heart to others. Use her gifts and talents for your glory. You've created her uniquely for such a time as this. May we both not discount the little ways we can write or speak for you. May we trust you in the waiting and in the in moving. Thank you, Father. Great is your name. You are worthy to be praised. This day and everyday. In Jesus' name, Amen..

Hi, Heather.
Another visit from you--another visit to your blog.
:O)
So, why aren't you a part of NaBloPoMO?
Or is that a silly question?
I hope you become a regular along The Writing Road. Appreciate your comments and questions.

I love it that you took something as unspiritual as Halloween and put a spiritual twist on it!

You are so right, we need to be authentic. Its easy to hide behind all of those masks and even fool ourselves. I've known people that I think have forgotten who they are inside. Sad, really.

For me, its all about taking that time each day and pouring myself out before God. If I allow myself to be open to Him, He can work in wonderful ways!!

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
