Sight

"The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision."

~ Hellen Keller ~

My grandmother has macular degeneration and each year her vision worsens. She is unable to be the same independent woman she was several years ago. She and I used to keep up a regular correspondence, writing once a month. When I lived overseas I could count on letters from Grandma - what an encouragement that was!

But now she can hardly write legible script because she cannot see her own handwriting. She tries to read using a magnifying machine but even that has become difficult. This summer she was able to see my kids for the first time (we live far apart) and she never once let on that she couldn't see well. She still enjoyed their presence, teaching them a silly song about buying bubble gum with a nickel and making great smacking noises. I remember when she taught me that song!

My grandmother may be losing her sight but she has not lost sight of her vision. She wakes each morning and begins the day in prayer. She prays for her family... and for the world. She spends the day returning to prayer continually. She used to keep a spiral notebook on her table which prompted her to jot down prayers here and there at any moment. Since she can't really read or write well anymore, I imagine her prayers are no longer written.

He said, “Go and tell this people:

“ ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;

be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’

Make the heart of this people calloused;

make their ears dull

and close their eyes.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their hearts,

and turn and be healed.” Isaiah 6:9-10

How often I see my childrens' faces but lack vision to see what God is doing in their little lives. How many times do I look in the mirror seeing my reflection but not seeing myelf with God's eyes? How frequently do my eyes fail me as I look for God in this world?

Oh, that I might have the vision to see beyond this moment, to see into eternity. That God would grant me heavenly spectacles through His word to see His purposes in everything.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

What an amazing example of not losing vision in spite of losing sight. This was a great quote. I, too, have been singing "Be Thou my Vision" since reading the quote. Bless you for hosting!

Great quote Heather. It really had me thinking over the weekend!!

Your grandmother sounds like a sweet lady. My grandmother used to write me every week during my first year of seminary. She didn't want me to get lonely (even though I was too busy for that to happen!!). It was such a sweet expression of love. She passed away last year but I still have many of those precious letters. Your post brought those memories flooding back to me.

I hope you are doing well. I've been so super busy I haven't had time to visit my blogging buddies lately. :( Hopefully things will settle down soon!! :)

Have a great week!!

It's obvious grandma is still teaching and setting an example.

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
