No Matter What

"Throughout the history of God's people as given to us in the Bible, we see that life is a test. We have before us the option to trust God "no matter what," or to walk away from Him. To walk away from God is to leave the fragments of our dreams in pieces on the floor, but to trust Him is to let God pick up the pieces and make us whole again. When we choose to let Him make us whole again, he will make our lives more beautiful than before."

On Sunday mornings we often sing worship music with profound words and uplifting beats. Recently we were worshipping to an up tempo song, clapping our hands while the worship leader's smile joyfully encouraged us to praise God. The happy little tune didn't match the words though.

It was so dischordant for me that I wondered if people realized what they were singing, "You give and take away...Lord blessed be your name." How many of us really praise God when He takes away something from our lives? It is not an automatic response, is it? Surrendering to God's plan for our lives can be challenging, but that's where we find peace.

The words are truth. I want to live by that truth. To bless, praise, worship and trust God no matter what circumstances come my way. It's easy for me to sing and clap to that beat when things are going well in my life. When it starts to fall apart, though, I sing the same song with tears streaming down my face. I still trust Him, but it isn't so easy.

I don't think I'm the best person to talk about how to praise God or lean upon Him during difficult times. As a matter of fact, I'm more of a fair weather Christian. I say God will do what is best, but when I am faced with a small crisis, doubt floods in.

Will I find a job? Do I trust Him to manage my future? I can't imagine facing the trials of losing a loved one, being in financial crisis, struggling in a broken marriage or facing a terminal illness. I don't presume to know how a person walks through those hardships. But, I do know that it can't be done without faith. I want to be a woman who is ready to follow God NO MATTER WHAT and for me that means taking it one day at a time.

When He gently reminds me that I'm not trusting Him with a situation, I guess that's my opportunity to let Him pick up the pieces. LIving a life of faith, being committed to Him no matter what happens: these lifestyles come from abiding in Christ. That's where I need to start.

Lysa TerKeurst's "What Happens When Women Say Yes to God" has spurred me on in this walk of faith as well as Brennan Manning's "The Signature of Christ."

This week, Nina is hosting "In 'Other' Words" at her site, Mama's Little Treasures .

Good Morning Heather,

This was awesome, and so TRUE. You are so right about singing the same song, but with tears flowing down at other times.

My mom used to love the song, "Is There Anything Too Difficult for Me". After she went to be with Jesus, I sang it and even questioned God as I did!

Life is full of so many opportunities to truly trust in God when we don't understand, and when it costs us so much.

But isn't this what makes it all so special?

His grace is truly sufficient...

Blessings to you my friend♥

I've FELT the STING of those words too...it's outward acknowledgment of TRUST...when I know full well I've been the one to RUN screaming away like a child in the middle of a tantrum....only to return and find the remains of myself...

I've learned in the trials, reluctantly, and on the other side I SEE what God was doing...I now pray that the next time, I know where to begin and stop short of RUNNING out the door, but instead clinging...in trust....

I watch those who DO it, and you are right, it's not made without faith...Starting and Trying with you girl! You sound so darn much like me....

:) lucky for me!;)
As always the visit has been good for my spirit!!
Hugs,
lori

This is the lesson that God has been teaching me in recent years--when external circumstances suggest that He is not a Friend to me--that the Truth lies in His character and my decision of the will to believe anyway. Beth Moore's Believing God was instrumental in rooting out my unbelief and God is still working. Hannah Hurnard's Hinds Feet in High Places is also a great read in describing this process. Be blessed, Heather.

Dear Heather,
Thanks Heather for your post and your encouragement to me as well.

One of the benefits of getting older, is that the patterns become clearer. In the last few years, I have been able to see what I couldn't see when I was in my 20s and 30's. God has done amazing things and just the way He has woven events and people together in my life makse my mouth hang open in awe. But I couldn't see it when I was younger.

His way will become clearer to you, so just keep taking one day at a time. That is really faith in action - being able to walk on a path where you can't see very far ahead.

Thank you for making me think! I, too, have thought about the discord of the words of that song and the way we sing it--in fact I rarely sing it without tears on my face because if God ever tested my sincerity of that song...well that's a test I'd rather not face. It really is all about trust! Bless you for sharing.

You know I have been struck by these lyrics before, too. I love this song but I've stopped myself and thought about the meaning. Wouldn't it be awesome if we had such a trusting attitude that we did praise Him even when He took things away? After all it is for our best but we don't ever see it that way!!

Ummm...you are anything but a "fair weather Christian." Everyone struggles with God's plan sometimes. Even Jesus did right before He went to the cross. I don't think doubt bothers Him nearly as much as disobedience. If we are faithful to what He has called us to no matter how much we question things, He will reward that.

I have no doubt you're going to find a job. It will probably be bigger and better than can even imagine. But, it's all in His timing. That timing thing trips me up too sometimes!!

Have a great day!!

The song that you mentioned is one of my favorites, especially when the Newsboys sing it. The words come from the book of Job. I believe that they were the words of Job. He experienced a lot of that "taking away". I've had some things taken from me and it's allowed me to grow closer to the Lord. But, I haven't had anything major taken away from me and I think that it would be hard for me to sing this song if that was to happen. Even though I know that God is in control and His way is best, I would probably struggle with my faith for a time.

I appreciate your honesty here, Heather. I'm thankful God teaches us trust little by little.

What a great post! That particular song is one that holds special meaning to me as I think about the loss of our daughter Alethea. They sang that song at my sister-in-law's church the Sunday following the birth of our daughter Alethea (she was stillborn). I remember my sister-in-law telling me about them singing that song and she just cried. It is such a powerful song but one that I, too, wonder if many really think about the words they're singing. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
