Radical Christianity

The word “radical” carries a connotation of a young man with piercing all over his body, black clothes….things that sound scary or crazy. There are lots of people labled "radical" but not many that we admire. If God asks us to be radical Christians, does that fill our hearts with fear?

We have thoughts like, “If I say yes to whatever God asks, He might ask something really impossible.” I don’t know very many radical Christians – my friend Ann comes to mind. She and I met in college – we were both math majors but she actually graduated when I was a freshman. We hung out together all the time, sharing life and praying for each other often. She's the kind of girl who would stop in the middle of a conversation to pray for me.

Ann would share the gospel with whoever she met – at a coffee shop, with a car repair man, anywhere! She ended up taking a teaching job in Hawaii and she shared the gospel regularly with her students, inviting them to Christian concerts, praying with them, etc. She got in trouble a few times with parents and her supervisors, but she felt the call of God to keep sharing about Jesus. She eventually began to work with YWAM and took countless mission teams overseas for several years. She is still single and still passionate for Jesus, but some physical problems have limited her ability to travel – she goes to the hospital and prays for her nurses and doctors (instead of the other way around). She isn’t perfect, but she keeps listening to God’s call on her life.

That kind of Christianity is contagious. One of my favorite songs is “Shine” by the Newsboys – make them wonder what we’ve got – make them wish they weren’t on the outside looking in. Our enthusiasm for Christ builds when we live in expectation for His action and this enthusiasm is what makes our Christianity contagious.

Average Jane Christian goes to church on Sunday, reads her Bible during the week as part of her routine, even attends Bible study or Sunday school, but she is going through the motions. She has no connection with God in these pursuits – they are good things to do in the Christian life, but that is not where the Christian life is found.

Are you longing for something more than this? Something more than Christian religiosity or duties? Are you longing for more depth in your relationship with Christ? Look at John 15 – Jesus’ words tying together our obedience, abiding and joy in our relationship with Him. That’s what I'm talking about – obedience and abiding. Abiding is listening for His voice and responding to His calls.

Are you ready to be radical and listen for His voice and live expecting His presence at any moment?

I know I am.

Hi Heather...

Wow, I want to be R-A-D-I-C-A-L for Him, more then anything else I'm crazy for.

I have a little surprise for you, come on over and pick it up.

(I think you may have received this already, but I just had to give it to you...from me.)

Thanks for stopping and commenting and being vulnerable. I think it would have clouded things for me too. But you do write well and you are such an encouragement. I love it that you stop by.
I am so ready to be radical- I was talking with my husband the other day about our teenagers (in the youth group). I told him that when one stops coming to events, and we know that their parents are not involved, to not do anything is to be *okay* their souls not being saved. I am so not okay with that.
What a wonderful post, and an encouragement to not let those moments pass us by! Thank you!

Oh YEAH!!!! Thanks for the encouragement. I don't want to go through the motions, but be a fire cracker for Him! I love your friends example!

When we rest and abide in Him, His Spirit can accomplish so much in and through us. And yet this abiding is radical...'cause most of us depend entirely too much upon the arm of flesh to work "for" God.

Thanks for a good post, Heather.

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
