My Weakness for His strength

The door opens and a powerful voice beckons you to enter the board room. In your black high heels, hose, and power suit, you are prepared for the ensuing questions. "Why would you be the best choice for this position ma'am?"
"What qualifies you for the job?"

Inevitably, the discussion will turn to this question: "What do you consider to be your top three strengths?" And as a follow-up inquiry, "What are your weaknesses?"

Most of us are well aware of our weaknesses for they have been tripping us up for quite a while. In addition, many people can pinpoint at least one personal strength. What are your top three in each category?

I am a good leader who uses vision and delegation to complete tasks. I have always been a student, picking up new concepts quickly and with eagerness. My greatest strength is teaching, because somehow I can take a complicated topic and break it down into manageable pieces for the learner.

Do I have to limit my weaknesses to only three? (Maybe you feel the same way.) First, I have a hard time keeping track of administrative tasks, such as making phone calls, managing valuable documents, etc. Second, I procrastinate which often causes me to be less than timely. Third, I struggle with negative thinking - it comes in the form of pessimism, low self-confidence, or depression.

The employer could go a couple of different ways with the interview now: either she will want to know how I will capitalize upon my strengths in this job, OR she will ask how I plan to improve these areas of weakness. There is a philosophy that says to ignore your weaknesses (because you won't likely improve much on them anyhow) and focus in on your strengths. The New Year's resolution philosophy leans toward improving weaknesses, but I have to admit that I haven't seen many people find that to be successful.

Is there another way?

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

God's voice whispers quietly in my ear and I lean forward to hear His call. Speak and write out of your weaknesses, for it is in your weakness that my power is made strong. Gulp. But God, I'm not sure I want to talk about those things and doesn't it make more sense to ask someone who has some answers?

How easily I could write about my strengths, but would God be glorified, or would I? If I admit my weaknesses, NO, if I BOAST about my weaknesses, then God alone gets all the glory.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? How could God use those for His glory?

My dear friend, you've gone and done it again! ....made me THINK after 9pm!!

I love it! It's a wonderful reminder...write about my weaknesses, my failures....

Oh couldn't I share the good things, you know the things that make me look good! Oh right! Die to self, glorify God, His strength...my weaknesses.

Pride, oh yes, pride. :-( Wanting to exault self...

Oh God help me to die to self and boast of my weaknesses!

THANK YOU HEATHER...a true friend who speaks TRUTH!

Amen, Heather! It's tough to share our weakness, but our vulnerability draws people to us, giving us a chance to show them we are who we are through Jesus.

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
