The Inner Sanctuary

“But remember, for all your adult life you’ll be a woman. And how you live your life as a woman, all by yourself before God, is what makes the real you. Nothing on the exterior can touch or change that precious inner sanctuary—your heart, his dwelling place—unless you let it. And God, who loves you very much, has tailor made all your outer life—your circumstances, your relationships—to pressure you into becoming that beautiful woman he’s planned for you to be.”

~ Anne Ortlund ~

During our morning Bible study, I stood behind Barbie, her long thin legs nicely packaged in designer jeans and her flowing blond hair bouncing to the middle of her back. I attempted worship but my heart was elsewhere. I couldn't concentrate on the words to the songs because I was so distracted by the external beauty of this woman in front of me. In my heart, I secretly harbored jealousy and wondered, "God, why didn't you give me long legs or flowing hair?"

In my prayer time, the Lord nudged my heart, "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” What was it that made David a man after God's own heart? It certainly had nothing to do with his external appearances. Was it his perfect adherence to God's laws? Doubtful. Did it have anything to do with his desire to put forth the best impression to the people? That might have worked if it hadn't been for the half naked dancing episode. So what does it look like to be someone after God's own heart?

A woman will be beautiful in God's eyes when she consecrates her heart as His dwelling place - His sanctuary. Do we realize that our hearts are God's home? His tabernacle has expanded to include many tents - the walking around kind of tents. In the original tabernacle, a specific place was set apart for the Holy of holies. Creating a holy place in our hearts does not mean following a prescribed list of acceptable behavior. Jesus said that OUT OF the heart the real you is revealed. It begins in our hearts (behavior follows belief) with a desire to be wholly His.

It's all about how we live when we are alone before God. When only His eyes are on us, when only He can see our thoughts and imaginations, and when only He knows our motivations. We need to stop worrying so much about being beautiful on the outside (both physically and spiritually) and start concentrating on being real before God. He wants the real, raw, uncensored you standing before Him with open arms, willing to listen to His voice. That's what He finds beautiful.

As I sat behind my beautiful friend, I was convicted that I had opened up the holy of holies in my heart and allowed something unholy and ugly to enter in and mar my heart's beauty. I will not keep this holy place pure by anything but honesty and through the grace of God's forgiveness and cleansing power.

Father, may my heart be consecrated unto You, completely Yours. Make it Your home and fill it with Your beauty.

Been there...want that...It's hard. It's hard when the "what if" or "why didn't" creeps in...

Walking along the counters...listening to the "Miracle claims"...Yet our best makeup tip and tools is right in our hands all the time....It's called the "Holy Bible".

It's guaranteed to tone, to soften, to strengthen and to compliment!

Spray a little bit of the "Holy Spirit" and we have the perfect beauty recipe!!

God bless you for an insightful post!

Heather, what a perfect response to this quote. It hits it right in my heart. I've been there, done that, too, so I know exactly what you're talking about. Your response, to the Lord, is a beautiful example for all of us. I'm so glad you took the time to share your thoughts today.

Love,
Elisa

P.S. You write beautifully! Don't give up on the book dream.

OH girl....we do that, find ourselves comparing over and over again...instead of looking to HIM....
I love what twinkle mom says...
"spray a little bit of the Holy Spirit and we have the perfect beauty recipe..."
SO TRUE, and only found on the inside, not in STORES anywhere...

Heather, you speak of what I would guess we ALL feel pushing us away from HIM while all the while HE is pressuring us to return inward....beautiful as always..
I think this quote hit those of us with girls even harder....

hugs!

I love your honesty, Heather. When will we learn to look for the good qualities in ourselves without regard for others?

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
