Hopefully Devoted to Him

Holiness.

Is it a word that makes you cringe? Does it make you feel overwhelmed or intimidated? If you are anything like me, then thinking of holiness brings out the perfectionist mentality in my personality.

But does holiness really equate to perfectionism? A word study of the root meanings of "holy" led me down an altogether different path.

"It is a snare to imagine that God wants to make us perfect specimens of what He can do; God's purpose is to make us one with Himself." Oswald Chambers

What is God's purpose for our lives?

To be holy - set apart, consecrated, devoted, completely HIS. It's not so much about behavior, but belonging.

In Deuteronomy 14:2, God called the Israelites to be consecrated because they were His treasured possession. The church has a similar calling, as described by Peter: we are a chosen people...and as such we ought to be holy. Remember though that holy does not mean perfect; holiness is being set apart for God's purposes.

The things in the temple were set apart for God, for specific purposes, but if you think about it, these inanimate objects had no ability to actually do something great for God. They were simply available for His use.

Thinking of myself as an inanimate object sounds a little degrading, but I must realize that all my efforts to look holy/perfect do not glorify God. God is not after perfect Christians who stand out in a museum of holiness; no, He is looking for people who are in perfect relationship with Him, who live in oneness with His purposes. "I am called to live in perfect relation to God so that my life produces a longing after God in other lives, not admiration for myself" Oswald Chambers adds. A focus on perfect behavior leads to personal glorification whereas a focus on loving Jesus brings all eyes to the Savior.

My question is this: are you ready to stop trying to do everything you think you're "supposed" to do in order to please God, and start offering your life up to be used by God?

It begins with our heart - a heart fully devoted to Him, a heart falling hopefully in love with Him and surrendering all to the Love of our lives. When our hearts are submitted to His will, He can begin to use us for His glory.

And now, if you heart is wholly His, does He have your ears as well? Are you listening for His voice? Are you ready for His call? Like the sheep in John 10, do you know that beloved voice and do you respond readily to it?

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.

And now that we've moved past our hearts to our ears, we must take the next step and give Him our feet and hands as well - following Him wherever He leads.

What an awesome reminder Heather. Thank you for sharing that & explaining it all so well.
Lately, I just feel like I want to go deeper in my walk with Him. It's just been so weird, like sometimes I'll just cry at thoughts of Him. Not sad tears, but just overwhelmed with where I'm at in my relationship with Him.
Anyway, thanks again. Must go get my beauty sleep...:)
In Him,
Lelia

Would love to publish this to the world!! This is a frequently misundersstood truth by the church and results in tension in homes and churches. Focusing on behavior rather than the "heart" of the matter. Have you read the book "Shepherding a Child's Heart"? The author writes from this perspective. Wonderful book!
I have to constantly check myself and make sure I am about being rather than doing...You have a gift with words, Heather. Keep writing! Love, Kathy

Another great post! I think people sometimes focus more on the activity of going to church than on following wherever God leads.

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
