Of Micro-organisms and Men

I sat down beside my friend at the cafeteria table to eat dinner as we enjoyed chatting about our day. We were new friends and she had just informed me that her undergraduate degree was in microbiology. She must be smart, I thought. She pinched off a piece of her paper napkin and put it between her thumb and forefinger to grasp the salt shaker and season her food. I sat open mouthed at her OCD (Obsessive Compusive Disorder) behavior...What was she doing?

She proceeded to lecture me for the next half an hour on the millions of micro-organizms which live everywhere around us. I guess there's a real down side to being a microbiologist. I always say, What you can't see can't hurt you. If you know what I mean.

Now I am not a disgusting slob or anything but I do not see the purpose in being a germophobe either. You can carry a tissue in your pocket to open every germ infested door and before you know it, you'll just decide it's easier to stay home in your germ free home. Me, I'd rather just get out there in this world with all of its invisible dangers lurking in the unknown of what I can't see. And if I have to tango with a germ, well, I'll face that dance when I get to it.

Maybe I had better rethink my philosophy. The micro-organisms are taking over the world, people, and we had better arm ourselves or at the very least hide out until the danger has past.

And now that I've been doing the dance with the micro-organisms lately...I'm thinking maybe my friend was right. I've disinfected my home three times daily, washing all bedding, vaccumming carpets obsessively and wiping down doorknobs with Lysol wipes after each use. The germs are waging war, but I WILL NOT LET THEM WIN!!!!

The germs are like little teensy tiny terrorists and their goal is TERROR. Well, they've just about got me, folks.

There's other hidden "terrorists" out in this world too, you know. They are invisible and they use fear to control us and they are ready to attack at any moment. The Apostle Paul says,

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authoriteis, against the powers of this dark world and agsint the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

So, maybe my battle is not against micro-organisms but something much bigger. It's a spiritual battle and this is my opportunity to defeat Satan by relying on God's strength in my fight with the teensy tiny terrorists. It's really not so much about the germs as it is about my attitude. I've been letting this battle get me down and I'm frustrated and irritable. Instead of relying on God, I've been trusting in my flesh, which has led to a bad case of grumpies.

Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power...and stand your ground! Okay Lord, I'll look to You for strength today and I WILL stand my ground against discouragement and irritation with You by my side.

Hi Heather!! I read your post this morning but this is the first chance I've had to comment. Busy, busy around here!

This made me laugh out loud! First of all, your writing is outstanding! It reminds me of the summer I spent in Argentina doing mission work. Oh, man, the living conditions and food sometimes were quite scary but God protected me. I think He made our bodies tough enough to handle many of those scary germs that lurk around every corner.

And...I think He made our spirits tough enough that, if we rely totally on Him, we can withstand anything, too.

Loved the detail...so glad your back doing them...you know already that I missed you!! I'm still praying for things to settle down for you.

Have a great weekend friend! Thanks for leaving a comment on my little ramblings today. I hope I don't sound like a complete mess on my blog!! :) I think you understood me though!! :)

You never cease to amaze me...
what an analogy...so practical and yet so profound...I'd have never in a million years connected the two...and you can betcha, I'm not EVER gonna look at my ClOROX bottle the same way again...I will think of the verse now...every time I dissinfect...what a way to pray...
disinfect my house...disinfect myself...stay on guard..the germs are out to get us!
Heather that was really, really good!!
you rock girl!
hugs,

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
