The Chief End of Man

"Don't blame suffering in the world on the anger of God. He's not mad; he didn't mess up. Follow our troubles to their headwaters, and you won't find any angry or befuddled God. But you will find a sovereign God.
Your pain has a purpose. Your problems, struggles, heartaches, and hassles cooperate toward one end -- the glory of God."

~Max Lucado, It's Not About Me~

This week has been filled with my own personal problems, struggles and hassles of the minute kind. If I were the narrator of my life story, I would describe myself as irritable and petulant in the midst of microscopic problems.

It's easy for me to think about the big disappointments of life (from the outside looking in) and comment on the need to glorify God through troubles. But, now, from the inside looking out of a teeny tiny problem, I can't practice what I preach.

I've gotten so caught up in the minutia of my problems that I have forgotten about the purpose of it all. Max Lucado's book title says a lot to me right now: It's not about me. It's about Him, isn't it? That changes a person's perspective right around. What is the chief end of man (the old-fashioned way of saying of what's our purpose)?

To glorify God and enjoy Him forever. This makes me think of another favorite author, John Piper. His book, Desiring God changed my thinking about the purpose of life and the meaning of my faith. The purpose of my life is not to just endure until the day of Christ's return, nor is it to glorify God dutifully without true joy. God is most glorified when I am most satisfied in Him. I glorify God BY enjoying Him forever.

So, when we get things all mixed up and view God as a harsh disciplinarian, we lose out on the most important thing. He longs for us to truly enjoy Him - that's what glorifies Him the most. Everything in this world all points to God's glory, including the daily ins and outs of our lives. The way we glorify Him is by sitting in His presence, on the good days and the bad ones too. That's our life purpose: to enjoy Him.

I think I need to go spend some concentrated time working on my life purpose! I can't wait!

We just read this morning in our Advent lesson from Isaiah 61..."...the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting...I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult in my God." When I read your post I went right back to that....
JOYFUL, JOYFUL we adore thee...

It's tough, no doubt especially when I like you get tangled up in the minute details...then the joy is zapped...
It's a great message for this time of year...when we need to remind ourselves that we are on the verge of a new year, where we can commit to being more aware of JOY!
hugs Heather...
I'm sensing a message here in my morning!
thanks for being a part of that!

Awesome post!

"God is most glorified when I am most satisfied in Him."

I've used that quote many times, and the book John wrote was life~changing for me.

Blessings to you Heather as you stay busy concentrating your time working on your life purpose.

I sometimes find it easier to endure the big things than the little things. Those little irritations I foolishly believe I can handle on my own. The change of perspective from it being about me to about God is life-altering. Thank you for sharing.
Sounds like we are in similar places. Peace, my friend. You are never alone.

Riht on lady - it really is all about focus isn't it. Not bowing down to our emotions - I underlined that like 10xs in my book lol.

Blessings

Man, you nailed it with that quote Heather!! I love that! Can I steal that and put it on my blog?? (I'll credit you!!)

I think this speaks to me today because I found out this morning that my 13 month old needs eye surgery. Its one of those days that you feel like putting your seat belt on because you don't know exactly what God is up to but know that HE has a plan.

I'm still praying for you girl. The bumpy times in life seem to last forever, don't they?? Keep looking to Him, He's got a plan in all of it!

Heather - thank you so much for visiting my blog, and for your kind words. I have found it to be so encouraging to connect with other Christian women who share such a love for our Lord. Together we can rise above the daily struggles, supporting each other in our quest to discover and live out our life purpose. Hope to hear from you again! Nina

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
