When I was younger, I often allowed my imagination to create stories filled with daring heroines and dashing heroes...I wasn't exactly an author-in-waiting, but I had fun coming up with stories that put me as the center of attention with a handsome man pursuing me.
There was the story where the famous movie star noticed me and fell for me (that one took some creativity...how would I meet him in my small town in the middle of nowhere?) and then the tale of the millionaire who whisked me away in his limo to shop for stunning gowns (and then he showered me with jewelry and other expensive gifts, of course) or perhaps my favorite tale of all, the one about how a timid and insecure girl found a guy who believed she could be anything she wanted to be in this world.
As an avid reader, I've realized that romantic novels seem to share some very similar traits. The story centers around a woman who needs love to overcome her situation in life...maybe she feels unworthy of love and finds it in an unusual place, or perhaps she is poor and destitute, but she finds a wealthy lover to lavish her with gifts galore.
Something in us as women hungers for this type of romance. A man who sees our inner beauty and realizes our potential despite outward appearances or limitations. We want to be the center of some one's attention and have love poured out upon us and we want someone to believe in us.
And even though I've grown up and realized that life isn't like the fairy tales, I've experienced true love in a way that is beyond my expectations. Yes, I have a wonderful husband and I'm blessed beyond belief in my marriage, but that's not what I'm talking about (sorry honey, don't take it personally, but I've found someone else).
I'm loved and I'm precious to a man who was willing to give his life me and I'm surprised to see that I have a man pursuing me and romancing me just like in a fairy tale. It might seem unholy to imagine Jesus as our lover, but He is much more that any man on this earth could ever be for us and he even calls himself the bridegroom in his relationship with his church. We usually think of God's love for us as that of a father, like a daddy loves his little girl and we are comfortable with that fatherly love.
But, romantic love is based upon a choice, on one person seeing something inherently lovable in the other, and the excitement comes from the element of the unknown. Will he choose me? Will he see that I am lovable? Will he see the real me and still pursue me? Am I worthy of His love?
And He turns around, sees the whole picture, and starts to romance the girl. Each day He plans little gifts into the schedule, surprising me with beautiful treasures beyond compare and constantly reminding me of His love. Each night, He sings over me, a serenade of love, proclaiming to the world that He sees something in me that is worth loving, someone He is greatly interested in. The amazing thing about this romance story is that it will last forever and that the best is yet to come.
I'm so thankful to know this kind of love!

And in terms of our reproduction of God's love to our husband, in the pursuing romantic way, day after day, year after year, learning from our Savior how to love and even just in the choice to love...
...beautiful
thank you
