Where are you Dwelling?

It takes ten positive comments to outweigh one negative.

I remember resonating with that statement my professor made because it seemed easier to dwell on any small criticism, while small compliments never seemed to be enough. I wonder what would happen if we reversed that mental pattern. What if people's criticisms never seemed worthy of contemplating, while any little word of praise was cherished?

Someone at work notices your orderly system of organizing and then a client angrily stomps out of your office. Which one will you choose to dwell on?
Sometimes it's more natural to dwell upon the negative event, so it must be a conscious CHOICE to dwell upon the positive. If you have a mental filter that sifts out all the positive things you hear and catches the negatives, then you have a propensity towards depression.

Right about now you're thinking that this positive thinking sounds like humanistic worldly advice. Don't be shocked to find out that this is actually quite Biblical.

Philippians 4:8 "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things."


People make kind compliments and I sometimes just brush them off. But if someone comments on the burnt toast, I sit right down on that one thought and dwell there all day, wondering if I'm a bad cook. I think that instead of dwelling on compliments or criticims, we ought to be dwelling someplace else entirely. What is true? What is noble? All "such things" lead me to Jesus. He is my dwelling place and I choose to build my nest there instead of on the negatives of the day.

You remain in me and my words remain in you...As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love...I have told you this that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. John 15


The path to joy is found in dwelling upon HIS words, not the words of others. Where are you dwelling today?

I know it is so easy to dwell on the negatives. I do it everyday. It is not easy to dwell on positives, but I guess we have to remember that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

That last statement is so powerful, Heather. Thanks for the reminder to dwell on the Word of God, not on the words of others. God's Word is so much more powerful!!

Yep, I'm guilty. You got me again. I've actually run into this full steam in the last week and God is gently reminding me my focus is WAY off. Thanks for being part of His reminder.

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) In REAL Life

This week, I've been thankful for some "real" life fun with people I love. Here's ONE: Yesterday morning, the kids started the day out with some Karaoke fun. The first song requested was "Shine" by the Newsboys and I smiled as the kids bounced around in the family room to this song. Our little guy then asked for his favorite: Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. Don't ask me why. But hearing a three year old boy sing about big girls crying is just adorable. We progressed to "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstill. I have no idea what she means (why not a black kitten and an apple tree?), but the kids love the "whoo-hoo" part and that's all that really matters. Whoo-hoo....whoo-hoo! And the last song, a favorite of all, "Mr. Roboto" by STYX. Oh yeah. We shine our light for Jesus in Robot style around our house. Three little robots marched around with jerky movements singing word-for-word the entire song. Here'
