The God of Miracles

One Sunday morning we heard a heartbreaking story of a little boy whose body would no longer support his soul. As a group, we went to the Lord in prayer for this young soul. Some prayed for his parents to have strength for this trial while others prayed for the little boy to be relieved of pain. Suddenly, a pastor began to add his prayers: prayers for deliverance, for complete healing, for a miracle. I don't know why we were shocked by his prayer. But, for some reason, we had all accepted the inevitable and had abandoned hope of complete recovery for this child. Did we no longer believe that God performs miracles?

Yes, of course, He DID many miracles in the past, but miracles seem so rare these days that I'm afraid we've stopped believing in His power. God has made it clear in His word and by His actions that miracles are not always the way He answers prayers. How He decides when to suspend the course of nature is beyond our comprehension. I'd rather pray for something that I know will have a sure answer than venture into the unknown of miracles. Perhaps this is just a picture of my heart, but I would guess there are plenty of other Christians who have become cynical about miracles. So, I held my breath when I heard my pastor's prayer for a miracle.

The next week we heard an amazing story. The boy was completely healed. No one could deny that God had intervened. Only God knows why He chose to heal this boy and not others. But, I wonder if He wasn't injecting new hope into our body of believers. A sense of elation that God cares about the least of us, even when He doesn't perform miracles. A window into all that God can do for us.

I was convicted that I had an unbelieving heart. I am still aware that miracles are not common occurances, but I want to have faith that dares to hope for the supernatural.

Heather, I think you are so on target! We do so many times fall into the praying just for what we feel is "safe" and not believing in those miracles that God and can and will perform. Thanks for reminding us all of this!

Heather,

This was great.

Many times I've prayed "O Lord help this unbelieving heart". I'm so glad He doesn't depend on us to do the supernatural!

What an awesome testimony, thanks for sharing it, my faith has been increased!

Blessings to you my friend~

Thanks for sharing. I believe each day is a precious miracle from God. If we could only see the miracle of each day and each dawn, we could appreciate those little things that we take for granted at times. Wonderful post.
I'm constantly praying, "I do believe, Lord help me with my unbelief."

I totally understand your point.

Great thoughts.
So True, Heather! I know in my own experience, when Justin was in the hospital hoping for a miracle while dealing with the reality of the situation was paradoxical. I had seen a miracle of the magnitude we were asking God for - just months before... When our miracle didn't come we had to choose, do we believe God in spite of what we see or do we give up! I choose to believe God and the miracle came not in the deliverance and healing here on earth, but in the ultimate arrival of my son to heaven and God's gentle reassurance that He had heard my prayers. Thanks for sharing! Blessings.

This is so true. I have myself been the recipient of miracles and yet I still have to pray for God to help me with my unbelief. I also hear others question the miracles God has given my family. They don't know. They weren't there. They didn't have to perform rounds of CPR to no avail and then, just like that see the child breathe! They did not hear the tone of voice or see the look on the paramedics faces when they saw my lethargic, shallow breathing son. He had been dead. Now he is alive and well. I give God the credit even if others don't.

God is into miracles. We just don't recognize them because they aren't what we expected.

Months after this incident I prayed fervently for God to cure my grandfather of a brain tumor. It didn't happen. He died in September of 2002. I don't understand it and I don't know why but I have to know that He knows best.

I do believe that we are all being called to a higher level of faith. One that doesn't require tangible evidence but spritual trust.

Thanks for the great post!

I visited you on exactly the post I needed to hear, be assured of, and have affirmation of God's healing power. Thank you for soothing my heart with your wonderful words.

WOW!! He is so amazing. It's a wonder we are so amazed at what He is all about! How boring it would be to serve a God who only showed off His power in Moses' day! :) Let His glory shine. We praise You sweet Jesus!!! Thanks for sharing Heather.
Praise God for healing! I also believe that he heals in different ways! My sister was healed in death, and I'm glad for that too! She is now complete and whole, and signing in heaven!

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw...

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,...

God's Encouragement

I am thankful this week for so much, but I have to share my little piece of encouraging news first. I submitted a little article to our newspaper and then I found out they don't accept unsolicited submissions, so I forgot all about it. Then, in our paper today, I saw my article! It was a little encouragement from God to keep plowing away at this writing thing even when it seems difficult. He is so tender-hearted toward me, I feel overwhelmed! I'm also thankful for the world class concert I attended today. I would have paid top notch prices for this concert which played out in a small bedroom with a karaoke. The first artist was a young singer who wrote her own music (straight from her heart) and the song was something about glorifying God by loving Him in all we do. She sang as she danced about in her ballerina costume. Next up was a short toucan with a toddler face peeping out and a loud voice. His arms moved to the music as he told us "My God is so big, so stwo...
