Wait Upon the Lord

Everlasting God by Lincoln Brewster
This song has been running over and over in my mind reinforcing this powerful Scripture related to patience - waiting upon the Lord, our Everlasting God. Listen and read on...

We spent some time on Saturday filling in our planter in the front yard with several different perennials. The earth was moist from a week’s worth of rainfall and the bulbs landed softly in their cozy dirt homes. We covered them with a blanket of more dirt and left them there with a sense of satisfaction and anticipation.

The next morning my little man wanted to go see the flowers. Where are they? He wondered. How do I explain a waiting period of 6 months to a child whose life is only 5 times that increment?

The flowers are babies and they are hibernating until winter is over; then they will slowly poke their heads through their beds into the sunlight world and we will enjoy their colorful beauty. I know, I don’t want to wait until spring to see them again either, but they need this time under ground to prepare for their moments of glory. They do not look like flowers yet (more like strange onions), so they wait for the time of transformation to be complete. If the flowers bloomed today, they would not last long in the bitter winter weather. Flowers were created to bloom in the spring – that is their God-given purpose.

Wait, my son, wait until spring when you have forgotten all about this day of planting and you will be surprised by a gift of beauty. We must wait until harsh winter has blown past and the time of rebirth will come. God will whisper to that seemingly dead bulb deep under the surface of the earth “The time has come.” The time for you to shine in all your glory.

The Greek word patience is translated “abiding under” (Vines). How appropriate. The bulbs are not dead, though they seem so, they are simply abiding under the mounds of earth. And so, hope is not dead either. We must abide – subsist on the blood of Christ flowing through our veins – we must live under the trials of today. We must draw deep breaths from His precious air and abide.
Live.
Under.
The death life constantly brings us.
Hope lives.
Spring comes.

Are there things you have planted that have not yet bloomed? What are you waiting for? How do we wait for God’s answers, how do we live in this winter of silence? If we jump ahead of God’s timing, we may wilt in the harsh winter ahead, but if we wait for the right time, if we wait to hear His whisper, our glory will shine for Him.

So don't lose a minute in building on what you've been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passioante patience, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. 2 Peter 1:5-7 MSSG

Oh Lord, I wait upon You in Your unfathomable wisdom for the gifts I seek – I wait for the time to be ripe. Oh Lord, grant patience to wait for winter to pass that spring may invade my life again. Father, I’m reminded that everything has its season and the rhythm of life is given by You. Creator of all, I wait for You to whisper in my ear, “It is time.”

Psalm 27:14 "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."

Love it!!! And at just the right time we will come forth and it will be His glory that is seen on our faces!! I'm reminded of one of my favourite passages
Song of Songs 2:10-13
My lover spoke and said to me,
"Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me.

See! The winter is past;
the rains are over and gone.

Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves is heard in our land.

The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me."

Yes there is a 'something' I am waiting for. In fact I wrote my desire down, put it in a box, wrapped up the box with gift paper and tucked away in a drawer. I know one day I will be able to unwrap that box, but only on the day that He wants me to receive the gift.

Thank you for renewing my hope in waiting on Him.

Be blessed

What a great illustration. Patience is so hard for adults to learn, much less children. Since becoming a mom I have found that I am more patient in some respects. But when I have to wait on God, I'm not always that way. I like how you used nature to illustrate the importance of waiting.

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw...

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,...

God's Encouragement

I am thankful this week for so much, but I have to share my little piece of encouraging news first. I submitted a little article to our newspaper and then I found out they don't accept unsolicited submissions, so I forgot all about it. Then, in our paper today, I saw my article! It was a little encouragement from God to keep plowing away at this writing thing even when it seems difficult. He is so tender-hearted toward me, I feel overwhelmed! I'm also thankful for the world class concert I attended today. I would have paid top notch prices for this concert which played out in a small bedroom with a karaoke. The first artist was a young singer who wrote her own music (straight from her heart) and the song was something about glorifying God by loving Him in all we do. She sang as she danced about in her ballerina costume. Next up was a short toucan with a toddler face peeping out and a loud voice. His arms moved to the music as he told us "My God is so big, so stwo...
