Gimmee, gimmee, gimee

On lazy Saturday afternoons, the kids often get restless and I begin to hear, “Mom, can we go rent a movie?” Or, “Can we run down to the store and buy some treats?” Once in the store, the materialistic spirit takes over with requests for new toys, new books, items that so-and-so has or special snacks that we don’t usually keep around the house. Gimmee this, gimmee that…

I understand where they are coming from since I have a long wish list myself of items I would love to add to my home and life. Even in tough economic times, we still come from a nation with the “gimmee”s. Part advertising, part upbringing, and part human nature, we are never quite content with what we have but always longing for something a little bit more. Or maybe I just speak for myself today – I struggle with the peaceful contentedness that the apostle Paul claimed to know. Even if the glass of life is 95% full, I have a tendency to look at the 5% of emptiness and wish for more.

Heather, I don't know what my problem is...but I click over there and your story is nowhere to be found. The date on the top devo was Mar 25th. Maybe I can check back tomorrow. Last time this happended to me, so I dunno...

I am with you on the challenge of contentment. I think I struggle with it less now that I have my shop and the kids are older. I wonder if it has to do with age~lol

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,

What works for you????

Ever since I heard about Works for me Wednesday, which Shannon hosts at Rocks in my Dryer , I've had a recurring thought. What works for me? Ummm, not much, some days. My dryer works, thank goodness. My kids - work? Not so much (I mean, really, they're kids). The dishwasher went kaput this summer and the heater died in late fall. We did not revive them, but thanks to loving parents, we replaced them with appliances that work. I think the most disturbing appliance that doesn't work around my house is ME. So, ladies, since today is backwards day, what works for you? How do you motivate yourself to keep a clean house when you know it will only last for mere minutes and no one will know or appreciate it anyway? I just need a little motivation to get this human machine working again. Would you give me some hints? How do you motivate yourself? What gives you that boost each day to get your housework done? Thanks for the help!
