When the Man is Away...

Well, I don't think there were any mice playing yesterday, but it sure seemed like everything went awry.

1. I went to church to work on a skit for Sunday and things seemed to be going just fine until I got ready to leave. I buckled up the kids and started to back out of my parking space only to discover that I could only go straight. The steering wheel went round and round but the wheels stayed put. I was spinning my wheels...

Thanks to a good friend, I made it home and the car got to stay at church. It's a very spiritual car, so I'm sure it didn't mind.

2. When I arrived home (in my friend's van), I noticed a large green canvas item on my roof. Yup, the patio umbrella was the first victim of the strong winds. I wondered if I should try to man-up and climb onto the roof to get it down. But, instead I decided to just leave it up there. And lo and behold, after a little while it blew right back down again. Never mind the fact that a few pieces of it were broken (at least they weren't my bones!)

3. The kids started to watch "The Parent Trap," an all-time favorite of mine, and the tape got eaten by the VCR. I stood in the living room with black ribbon in my hands wondering what the VCR had against Haley Mills. I mean really, what did she ever do to the VCR? She's adorable!

4. I put the garbage cans out last night for the early morning pick up. After breakfast this morning I realized that they were the second victims of the wind. Our garbage was strewn all over the street and into the neighbor's yard across the street. So, I picked up all the cheese cracker boxes, granola bar wrappers, slimy banana peels and coffee grounds that I could manage. And prayed for stray hungry dogs, birds, rabbits...to eat up the remaining nasty chunks. Ewww.

You'll be happy to know that the man is home again. Who would have ever thought that one night away from home could wreak such havoc?

I so get that!! My washing machine flooded the basement when he wasn't home, the roof leaked when he wasn't home.

I loved your humor, especially the Christian van:)

When you get a chance come visit me, I tagged you!!

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey

Shannon, at Rocks in my Dryer , is hosting a huge giveaway! Isn't that exciting! I love to give something meaningful to my friends - as I shop, I always look for just the right item that fits our relationship and the individual's personality. So, if you stop by this little blog of mine, I think you might like this gift I've picked out. This fall, I have been nourished by the wisdom of Phillip Yancey in his recent book on prayer. Our Bible study has plumbed the depths of prayer with Yancey's help in this amazing book. My personal prayer life has been challenged and I have probed the deeper questions surrounding prayer with a beloved mentor. I would love for you to enjoy this book too. I'll be giving the book away to one blessed commenter. So, leave a comment here and I'll be drawing a name next week to give away this treasure box full of well-mined jewels from God's Word and life's experiences. Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered in the draw...

Women of Influence Part II

What and who has influenced me as a woman to be a strong leader and to be where I am today ( Part I here )? When I was a young woman, I remember being a bit affronted with the image of the  Proverbs 31  wife - the Bible's example of the perfect woman, the almost impossible unattainable goal.  The trouble was, I saw her as someone who was just a little TOO perfect, too industrious (can anyone say "workaholic") and definitely too much like the 1950's conservative image of a homemaker.  I had a terrific example of motherhood in my own mom who cooked healthy meals for us, loved to be silly and celebrate with panache, made my dresses and gave me a wonderful childhood free of worries.  However, as a new mom, I felt very strongly about being labeled as "just a mom" - I didn't want motherhood to be what defined me.  I wanted to make my mark on the world and do Big things for God and I just didn't think that searching out the right food for mealtime or ke...

Thankful Thursday

A few things that fill my heart with gratitude... *Bright explosions in the sky *Bug repellent *Calamine and band aids for when we forget about the bug repellent (and the polka dot girl I put to bed each night whose sensitive skin seems to attract the little suckers) *Days spent at the beach *Life jackets *Aloe, although it can't take away a lobster red sunburn, it does soothe *Photographs and memories *The public library. My family has been enjoying plenty of summer library programs. *Ok, I'm even thankful for cockroaches. The kids sure had fun playing with the huge ones the "Bug Guy" Brought in for the last program we attended. They even ate a few bugs. (I am NOT joking!) I, on the other hand, found it conveniently necessary to excuse myself to the restroom right around the time the roaches and tarantulas were being brought out. *I'm thankful for a new job...which will be starting soon (more on that later). *Green slime, explosions, goggles and lab coats...yes,...
